Ultralight Pilot Licence

After training

Cockpit Management

Cockpit management is ensuring that all equipment, documents, checklists, and charts needed for the flight are on board and easily accessible.

With this comes the need to keep things organised to reduce the risk of loose objects and confusion in flight.

Kneeboards

Kneeboards, which are increasingly becoming electronic, organise all the documents necessary for the flight.

A5 size is the most convenient, particularly for small ultralight aircraft. They can have multiple flip-over pages to hold navlog, charts, notepad, airfield plates, etc.

If you use an electronic device for navigation, airfield plates, frequencies, etc, you should always have a backup available in the event that it fails.

Other considerations

The pilot must be able to see inside and outside references.

Loose objects that might be tossed about in turbulence must be secured.

The routing of wires and cables for intercoms, headsets, cameras, GPS, and electronic devices should not interfere with the operation of any control.

If a phone or tablet is used, it should be securely fixed in place with a suitable mount.
