A vertical speed indicator (VSI) is an instrument which indicates the rate of climb or descent of an aircraft.
The VSI is a static-pressure instrument which reflects rate of climb or descent by detecting rate of change in air pressure.
The indicator is usually marked in 100 foot increments.
